Round Three
Round Three was much like Round Twoânot too bad. We would stay on this schedule throughout the entire duration of chemotherapy treatments. The three-drug cocktail treatment left her completely wiped out, and the second and third were somewhat easier. This allowed her body a slight break from the stress while continuing the fight. Thereâs something comforting about becoming familiar with a patternâeven one so strange and morose as this. All breast cancer treatments are not the same, and some are much more aggressive because of the different types of cancer there are. Even though Phyllisâ treatments were bad, compared to what we had researched and had been told by friends who were breast cancer survivors, it could have been much worse, especially if she had required radiation.
Our family was getting into the chemo routine with us, though, and it was evident at Starbucks one day. Caroline and Phyllis were shopping at Midtown in Tuscaloosa and stopped into Starbucks for a pick-me-up of afternoon coffee. When they saw the long line, Caroline suggested saying, âExcuse me, my mother has cancer. Could we please move to front of the line?â Phyllis held her back. She said she felt well enough to wait.
But just before Round Three, something happened that took the wind out of Phyllisâ sails. Her hair started falling out.
